What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? Is it different from SEO?

Atualizado em 22 de julho de 2026

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting your brand cited when someone asks an AI something, like ChatGPT or Gemini. It's different from SEO: SEO competes for a spot in a list of links, GEO competes for a presence inside the answer. The two coexist, but they measure different things.

What GEO (and AEO) is, without the jargon

When you search something on Google, you get links and you choose where to click. When you ask an AI, you get a ready-made answer, built from sources it considers trustworthy. SEO is the set of practices to show up well in the list of links. GEO is the set of practices for the AI to know your company, trust it and cite it when answering.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the older sibling of the idea: optimizing for engines that answer directly, with no list of links. In practice, both terms describe the same shift in the point of capture: from click to citation. The full technical path is in how to get your company to show up in ChatGPT.

The V-C-S guideline from the PULSO method

In-house, we assess whether a brand is ready to be cited using the V-C-S guideline, our own guideline from the PULSO method, organized into three practical questions, in this order:

  1. Does the company exist for the AI? Is there enough signal on the web (website, profiles, mentions) for the models to know it exists and what it does?
  2. Does the information match? Name, address, services and specialties need to tell the same story everywhere, because contradiction tends to lower the model's confidence.
  3. Is there citable content? A complete, clear, verifiable answer is the kind of material the AI can extract and reproduce.

A brand that's weak on any one of the three fronts can drop out of the race, no matter how good it is on the others. Well-managed reputation, reviews and consistent mentions feed into that account, and it's what we work on in digital reputation.

Did SEO die? No, but it became insufficient

SEO is still alive because AIs read the web that SEO helped organize, and whoever disappears from Google tends to disappear from the answers too. What changed is that ranking stopped being the finish line: now it's a means. A page that's first on Google might never get cited if the content isn't citable, just as a brand outside the first page can show up in the answer if it has consistency and authority from other sources. We go deeper on this in did SEO die with AI.

In practice, in the countryside

We measured what AIs answer today about companies and services in the Northwest of São Paulo state, and the pattern is clear: strong regional brands simply don't exist in the answers, because they never built citable signal on the web. For a company in Birigui or Araçatuba, that's both a threat and an opportunity at once: the territory is empty, and whoever organizes visibility, consistency and citable content first tends to become the source the AI repeats.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. SEO is still what gets your website found on Google, and part of what AIs read comes from well-ranked pages. GEO is the next layer: organizing presence and content so the AI trusts and cites your brand.

What is AEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is optimizing content for answer engines, engines that answer directly instead of listing links. In practice, GEO and AEO point to the same shift: being the source the AI uses to answer.
