What is llms.txt and does my company need one?

Atualizado em 22 de julho de 2026

llms.txt is a simple text file, published at the root of a website, that summarizes for AI models who the company is, what it does and which content deserves attention. It's a signaling proposal, not a mandatory standard nor a citation guarantee. For anyone who wants to be cited by AI, it's worth having.

What the file is, in plain language

Think of it as a relative of robots.txt, the file that guides Google's crawlers. llms.txt follows a similar idea, but for a different audience: instead of regulating access, it offers an organized, readable summary of the site, in text with markdown structure. Inside it fits the company name, a short business description and links to the pages that best explain who you are, like services, about and reference content. The idea is to give the model a ready-made map, instead of leaving it to piece the puzzle together on its own.

What it does and what it doesn't

What it does: it cleanly signals which pages carry the most reliable information about your company, making it easier to read for systems that respect this kind of file. What it doesn't do: guarantee citation, force any model to comply, or replace the underlying groundwork. AIs decide who to cite based on several observable signals, like structured sources, entity consistency and verifiable proof, a topic we detail in how AI chooses who to cite. llms.txt is one more signal in that set, not a shortcut. There's also no established public consensus on universal adoption, so we treat the file as low-cost best practice, not a rule of the game.

Does your company need one?

If your company wants to appear in AI answers, yes, the cost of creating and publishing the file is low and its effect adds to the other signals. If the site doesn't even have citable content, a clear business description and consistent information across the web, llms.txt alone won't fix anything: the diagnosis comes first, which we explain in my company doesn't show up in AIs, now what. Here at desigual we practice what we propose: we publish our own llms.txt, open for anyone to check, as part of the digital reputation management we apply to ourselves before recommending it to clients.

In practice, in the countryside

In the interior of São Paulo state, almost no mid-size company has this file, which means open ground for whoever moves first. A well-made file, added to a clear website and consistent information across directories, already puts a regional business ahead of local competitors when it comes to being found by AI.

Perguntas relacionadas

Does llms.txt guarantee the AI will cite my company?

No. The file is a signaling proposal, not a command, and there's no guarantee every model reads or follows it. It helps as one more organized signal, alongside citable content and consistent entity.

What's the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt guides search crawlers on what they can access. llms.txt proposes a readable summary of the company and its important content, designed for language models. One regulates access, the other suggests context.
